While the underlying reasons for why someone will grind their teeth when sleeping at night are not fully understood studies have been done that suggest the grinding could be linked to stress, anxiety, consuming too much caffeine, drinking too much alcohol, snoring, being diagnosed with sleep apnea and smoking cigarettes.

Both adults and children can grind their teeth at night, which can lead to their experiencing jaw pain and/or headaches the next day.

5 tips to prevent teeth grinding at night

Finding the best ways to prevent someone from grinding their teeth at night will not only improve their dental health but their overall health as well. Grinding one’s teeth can not only cause dental health problems, it can also cause additional health problems, i.e. earaches, headaches, jaw joint disorders.

  1. Avoid drinking or eating anything that contains caffeine. Drinking plenty of water is also suggested as dehydration is thought to be connected with teeth grinding at night.
  2. Avoid chewing on anything, including chewing gum. This teaches the jaw muscles how to relax. When someone is constantly chewing on pencils, for example, it conditions the jaw muscles so they get used to the act of clenching and therefore should be avoided.
  3. Practicing a few stretching exercises as well as implementing a few facial massage techniques is a great way to relax the jaw muscles before going to bed.
  4. Relaxing the jaw muscles before going to bed can also be done by holding a warm towel gently against the cheek next to the ear, a great tip when it comes to soothing the jaw muscles.
  5. Requesting a customized mouth guard be made by an experienced dentist that can be worn during the night is a popular teeth grinding solution that has worked successfully for many people who tend to grind their teeth at night on a regular basis.
