Implants can replace a single tooth, or a full set of teeth.  Treatment is usually carried out in the office under local anesthetic or light sedation. Often, a dental implant can be placed at the same time as tooth removal. A temporary crown can be attached so that the patient doesn't have to leave the office with missing teeth.

The process is usually completed in two phases. In the first stage, the dental implant (a small titanium device shaped like a tooth root) is placed into the jaw bone. A period of time is allowed for the dental implant to attach to the bone, a process known as osseointegration.

The second phase takes place after osseointegration. A post that extends above the gum line is added, and a series of impressions and bite registrations are made. A replacement tooth (or crown) is custom made in the laboratory and attached to the post with cement or a tiny screw.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a special surgical grade titanium post, manufactured to highly precise specifications, under strict sterile conditions, that is inserted surgically into the jawbone below the gum surface. The bone bonds to the post, forming a secure foundation to which your new teeth can be attached.  Implants can replace a single tooth, or a full set of teeth.
